William DeAndrea (1952–1996) was born in Port Chester, New York. His first book, Killed in the Ratings (1978), won an Edgar Award in the best first mystery novel category. That debut launched a series centered on Matt Cobb, an executive problem-solver for a TV network who unravels murders alongside corporate foul play. DeAndrea’s other series included the Nero Wolfe–inspired Niccolo Benedetti novels, the Clifford Driscoll espionage series, and the Lobo Blacke/Quinn Booker Old West mysteries.
Marvin Kaye (b. 1938) is the author of more than forty books. Born in Philadelphia, he published his first nonfiction book, The Histrionic Holmes, in 1971, and followed it with the mystery novel A Lively Game of Death (1972), which introduced sleuthing public relations agent Hilary Quayle, Kaye’s most famous character. In addition to five Quayle novels, Kaye has written and edited dozens of works of fiction and nonfiction. He is also one of the founders of the Open Book, New York City’s oldest continuously operating reading theater.
Stephen Marlowe (1928-2008) was the author of more than fifty novels, including nearly two dozen featuring globe-trotting private eye Chester Drum. Born Milton Lesser, he adopted the pen name Stephen Marlowe for his books following Chester Drum, the Washington-based private detective who first appeared in The Second Longest Night (1955). Although a private detective in the mold of Philip Marlowe, Drum was distinguished by his jet-setting lifestyle, which carried him across the globe, from Mecca to South America.
